The Deaconess Medical Center Transitional Year Residency Program is
designed to prepare physicians in their first postgraduate year for future
categorical residency programs. Regardless of a resident’s future
career plans, we believe that every physician should have a broad well-rounded
foundation to build upon. Our program offers a wide range of clinical
experience to maximize the resident physician’s skill and knowledge
base. We offer 4 elective rotations for each transitional year resident,
allowing each resident to customize their transitional year in order
to meet personal and career needs. If you are looking for a stimulating,
broad-based, state-of-the-art clinical experience we would like to hear
from you.
Deaconess Medical Center is a 388-bed, non-profit, tertiary referral
center. Patients from Eastern Washington, Northern Idaho, Western Montana
and Canada come to Spokane to access our physicians and our medical center.
Patient volume averages over 14,000 inpatients, 33,000 emergency department
visits, and 2,400 deliveries each year. This wide referral base and patient
volume provide a great case mix allowing residents to hone their diagnostic
and therapeutic skills.
The Deaconess Medical Center Transitional Year Residency Program is
fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education
(ACGME). While a certain volume is necessary to achieve our goals of
a broad, well-balanced clinical exposure, we believe that resident’s
learn best and provide better patient care when they are not overly fatigued.
Thus, we are in full compliance with the ACGME’s duty hour requirements.
In order to improve patient care and to decrease call requirements we
have instituted a night float system. As a result, our residents take
a minimal amount of call. Ancillary services at Deaconess are unsurpassed.
As a result, residents are not called upon to do scut work (IV’s,
blood draws, patient transport) and they are able to concentrate learning
and providing outstanding patient care.
